
Rachel Desfeux est né à Saint-Hilaire du Harcouët (Normandie-France) en 1969.
Il a obtenu sa thèse portant sur la Synthèse et la Caractérisation de Films Supraconducteurs à haute Température Critique, spécialité Sciences des Matériaux, à l'Université de Caen en 1994 sous la direction du Professeur B. Raveau.
Il a ensuite réalisé un stage post-doctoral (1994-1995) au sein du Laboratoire de Physique du Solide à l'Université « Tor Vergata » à Rome (Italie). Durant cette période, il a travaillé sur la Synthèse de Nouveaux Matériaux Supraconducteurs en Couches Minces sous la direction du Professeur G. Balestrino.
Après avoir occupé un poste d'ATER de l'Université de Caen (1995-1996), il a été nommé « Maître de Conférences » à l'Université d'Artois en septembre 1996, et a rejoint le Laboratoire de Physico-Chimie des Interfaces et Applications devenu l’Unité de Catalyse et de Chimie du Solide à partir de 2008. Ses travaux de recherche sont axés sur la synthèse et la caractérisation des propriétés structurales, de surface et physiques de couches minces à propriétés spécifiques (magnétiques, piézo/ferro-électriques…), dans un but d'application aux dispositifs. Il focalise ses investigations aux échelles micro- et nano-métriques en employant différentes techniques de Microscopie à Sonde Locale (AFM, MFM, PFM, cycles d’hystérésis piézoélectriques locaux…). En 2003, il a obtenu son Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches. Il a été promu Professeur des Universités en 2008.
