 Jean-François Blach est né à Béthune (France) en 1975. Il a obtenu sa thèse à l'Université d'Artois en 2003, sous la direction du professeur M. Warenghem, dans le domaine des cristaux liquides et des couches minces ferroélectriques ( cliquer ici pour télécharger la thèse en français). En 2004, il a pris un poste d'ATER dans le laboratoire de ThermoPhysique de La Matière Condensée de l'Université du Littoral, à Dunkerque sous la direction du professeur J.M. Buisine. Durant cette année il a étudié les propriétés vibrationnelles des PDLC (Cristal liquide dispersé dans les polymères) par diffusion Raman. En 2005, il est devenu ATER ( voir glossaire) dans Laboratoire de Physique de La Matière Condensée de d'Université de Picardie Jules Verne à Amiens sous la direction des professeurs M. Karkut et J. Pavel. Au cours de cette année il a étudié la transition de phase d'un cristal liquide ferroélectrique par mesure du courant pyroélectrique. En 2006, il a été chercheur non-permanent au «Laboratoire de Physico-Chimie des Interfaces et Applications» à Lens dans le groupe Cristal liquide dirigé par le professeur M. Warenghem. Actuellement il est Maître de conférences à l'université d'Artois à Lens et effectue sa recherche au sein de l'équipe NanoMatériaux à Visée Phtotonique. Son champ de recherches concerne la dispersion de nanoparticules (ferroélectrique ou métallique) dans un milieu organique (cristal liquide) dans le but d’en partager les propriétés avec son milieu hôte.
Novembre 2012 : il obtient le diplôme d'habilitation à diriger des recherches de l'Université d'Artois sous la direction du professeur Henninot. Le sujet de cette habilitation concerne les propriétés electro-optiques de cristaux liquides et de nanoparticules.
