Sébastien Rio est né à Vannes (France) en 1976. Il a obtenu son doctorat de l'université de Nantes en 2004 sous la direction du Pr. P. Le Cloirec au laboratoire GEPEA. Ses travaux ont porté sur la préparation de matériaux carbonés poreux à base de boue activée issue de station d'épuration et application en épuration d’effluents industriels. Il a ensuite passé 18 mois en postdoctorat au laboratoire RAPSODEE d'Albi (France), où il travaillé sur la synthèse de l'hydroxyapatite comme adsorbant pour diminuer les émissions de métaux lourds lors de l'incinération des déchets spéciaux. De 2006 à 2007, il est devenu ATER (Attaché Temporaire d'Enseignementet de Recherches) au laboratoire GEPEA de Nantes et, ses recherches ont été centrées sur la microfluidique, il a alors étudié l'hydrodynamique des émulsions dans des systèmes miniaturisés. En 2007, il a rejoint le LPCIA. Ses recherches portent sur le génie chimique appliqué à la biomasse et au développement de nouveaux biomatériaux.
